About Copan State Park

Copan State Park is located in northeastern Oklahoma near the Arkansas border and surrounds the 1,500-acre Copan Lake, a reservoir formed by damming Little Caney River. The park covers more than 1,500 acres of forested hills and gentle valleys that provide a diverse landscape for outdoor activities. The area is characterized by oak-hickory woodlands and cedar glades, supporting populations of whitetail deer, wild turkey, quail, and a variety of songbirds. The lake is stocked regularly and supports healthy populations of bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill, making it popular for anglers. Several hiking and mountain biking trails wind through the woods offering opportunities to explore the natural environment. Copan State Park also features campgrounds equipped for RV and tent camping with modern amenities, picnic areas, boat ramps, and swimming areas. The park’s history is closely linked with the development of the lake for flood control and recreation by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1960s. Visitors are drawn here for a peaceful setting combining water-based recreation with wooded trails. Its proximity to small towns like Copan and can serve as a quiet retreat for anglers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts looking to experience northeastern Oklahoma’s landscape away from more crowded destinations.
